This is Brian. He may look unhappy and totally miserable to you. But appearances can be deceiving. You see, Brian is so stinking happy on the inside, he can barely contain himself. Last night, he met the Toad of his dreams. While catching bugs. They are making big plans for the future. Tadpoles and all.
Yes. You are viewing a very wealthy and blessed toad. He’s jubilant…. I’ll tell you. Ecstatic.
Just because of their outward appearances…. I think Toads might be a misunderstood bunch.
Most humans view them as ugly or gross. Some even accuse them falsely of causing warts. Seriously. Certain people actually believe they cause warts….. an uninformed judgement….. based on popular cultural myths. (Human viruses cause warts. Not toads. Not frogs.)
But… back to Brian. Outward appearances. All that jazz. The old axiom continues to ring true… time and time again. You cannot judge a book by its cover.
Yet…..it our human nature to judge….. to deduce, gather, infer, gauge, estimate, guess, surmise, conjecture…. to regard. We size everything up. From how much jelly to put on that piece of toast…… to…. how we really feel about a black man sitting as President.
Every second of every day of every year of our lives, we are in a state of judging… call it what you will.
Each person views each moment in a different way. We assess situations, people and ideas simply because it is the only way to function. Without it, the human race would have died out long ago.
However, we can do this wisely… basing our judgement on good information. Or we can do it blindly… or with predetermination…. or prejudice.
So Brian. He may look miserable on the outside… but on the inside… he’s happy as a Frog in the Pond. Or a Toad on a Toad Stool.
Fault him not……. He just has a hard time turning that frown upside down.
