For some dang reason, I was really thinking long and hard about veils today.<\/p>\n

They are something we don\u2019t give much attention to\u2026 as a general rule.\u00a0 In fact, I can\u2019t remember the last time someone asked me, \u201cHave you seen any good veils lately?\u201d<\/p>\n

I started wondering when they first started … and why.<\/p>\n

I found a lot when I did a little research.\u00a0\u00a0 Veils have been around a really, really long time.\u00a0 The first recorded instance goes all the way back to the 13th century BC.\u00a0 That\u2019s BC.\u00a0 That\u2019s first recorded instance.\u00a0 BC.<\/p>\n

And that equates to a long time ago.\u00a0 The record can be found in an Assyrian legal text from the 14th to 13th century BC, which restricted its use to noble women and forbade prostitutes and common women from adopting it.<\/p>\n

Homer, in his Ancient Greek musings\u2026 frequently wrote of them.<\/p>\n

They have had many different meanings too.\u00a0 Everything from mourning a death, to entering a marriage, to aristocracy\u2026 to hiding one\u2019s identity.\u00a0\u00a0 Different religions have a variety of references.\u00a0 And of course, they are not only used to cover people\u2026. they cover things.\u00a0 Tabernacles…\u00a0 and such.<\/p>\n

I, personally, am not a big veil wearer.\u00a0 They seem to get hung up on the hood of my sweatshirts.\u00a0 And frankly, I have not had much luck finding one that really goes with any of my running shoes.<\/p>\n

In fact, I think the last time I had a veil on was for my Holy Communion in the 2nd grade.\u00a0 And from the photos\u2026 it doesn\u2019t look like much of a veil at all.\u00a0 I think my Mom probably pinned a piece of nylon scrubbing cloth to my head\u2026. from the looks of it.\u00a0 You know.\u00a0 The kind that came “free” with the purchase of Palmolive Dish Soap.<\/p>\n

I can remember trying to get out of the whole dressing up thing that day\u2026 to no a-veil.<\/p>\n

But back to it.\u00a0 Sometimes\u2026 I think\u2026 we don\u2019t physically wear them.\u00a0 But at times we put them on emotionally, or psychologically.\u00a0 It happens during those times when we don\u2019t want someone else to see something about us.\u00a0 No matter what it is, that we don\u2019t want them to see.<\/p>\n

I\u2019m not saying this is a bad thing.\u00a0 In fact\u2026 I think sometimes it may even be necessary.\u00a0 Maybe it is best to keep certain parts of our being… or our thoughts… in our own private space.<\/p>\n

Some people seem to be very transparent.\u00a0 But I am not so sure about that\u2026. either.<\/p>\n

And then there is my dog.\u00a0 The other day, Ollie asked me if she could wear a veil.\u00a0 I told her of course she could.\u00a0 I don\u2019t want to stunt her creativity.\u00a0 But I asked her why.<\/p>\n

She responded, \u201cYou told me I was part Jack Russell and part Peaking Nose.\u201d
\nI just shook my head\u2026 \u201cGoofball.\u00a0 I said Pekingese.\u00a0 PEKINGESE!\u00a0 Not Peaking Nose.\u201d<\/p>\n

She kept it on till dinner time.<\/p>\n
