Levels of Distinction.\u00a0 We humans, want to stand out at something.\u00a0 Most of us, at least.\u00a0 We want to be really good at a task, or have a special quality.\u00a0 Some seek fame\u2026 others strive to win\u2026 or succeed at work.\u00a0 Get a promotion.\u00a0 Whatever.<\/p>\n

There just seems to be an innate need to be significant. At something.\u00a0 Anything.\u00a0 Call it what you will\u2026..\u00a0\u00a0 importance,\u00a0 note, consequence; renown, fame, celebrity, reputation; merit, worth, greatness, excellence, quality.<\/p>\n

And sometimes you win.\u00a0 Sometimes you lose.<\/p>\n

Here are a few examples\u2026 concerning this whole \u201clevel of distinction\u201d matter.<\/p>\n

I should warn you.\u00a0 At times\u2026 it goes terribly awry.<\/p>\n

For instance\u2026. in 1981, Deborah Ann Fountain (Miss New York) became the first Miss America pageant participant disqualified for “illegal use of padding” during the swimsuit competition.\u00a0 Her hills fell down\u2026 and it broke her crown.<\/p>\n

Another for you to chew on.\u00a0\u00a0 Mr. and Mrs. Wrigley must have been proud.\u00a0 The first item bought by scanning its UPC code was a ten-pack of Wrigley’s Juicy Fruit gum, purchased at an Ohio supermarket. It’s now on display at the Smithsonian.<\/p>\n

Okay.\u00a0 If someone tells you their \u201cClaim to Fame\u201d is being double-jointed\u2026 you should do a double-take.\u00a0 No matter how flexible a person is, there is no such thing as being \u201cdouble jointed.”\u00a0\u00a0 From what I am told\u2026. most extreme contortionists suffer from Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome.<\/p>\n

On the other hand.\u00a0 Here is a guy with a great butt.\u00a0 A Hollywood stuntman\u00a0 of long ago.\u00a0 His name was Alvin Kelly.\u00a0\u00a0 In 1924, Kelly sat atop a flagpole for 13 hours.\u00a0 That is a long dang time on a flagpole.\u00a0 It inspired copycats across the country to replicate his feat\u2026.to varying degrees of success.<\/p>\n

So, for as much as we try\u2026 and seek to be the best\u2026 go higher than any others\u2026 we might remember this:\u00a0 Trees do not grow higher than 130 meters\u2026. as it is physically impossible for the water to rise higher.<\/p>\n

I guess, sometimes\u2026 it is good to know your limits….\u00a0 when you are rising toward the stars.<\/p>\n
