{"id":751,"date":"2014-04-28T23:49:37","date_gmt":"2014-04-29T03:49:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/gollypolly.com\/30473\/?p=751"},"modified":"2014-04-28T23:49:37","modified_gmt":"2014-04-29T03:49:37","slug":"whatcha-gonna-do","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/gollypolly.com\/30473\/?p=751","title":{"rendered":"Whatcha gonna do?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gollypolly.com\/30473\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/meat50.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-752\" src=\"https:\/\/gollypolly.com\/30473\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/meat50.jpg\" alt=\"meat50\" width=\"700\" height=\"526\" srcset=\"https:\/\/gollypolly.com\/30473\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/meat50.jpg 700w, https:\/\/gollypolly.com\/30473\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/meat50-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>There was a kid in my second grade class.\u00a0 His name was Tommy Gunderson.<\/p>\n<p>I liked Tommy okay, I suppose.\u00a0 He seemed pretty smart and nice.\u00a0 But he was one of those kids who always had the messy desk, and never could get his homework done on time.<\/p>\n<p>At any rate, Tommy Gunderson , used to say\u2026 WAY back in the second grade\u2026 that one day he was going to be President of the United States.\u00a0 A lot of boys back in those days used to say it. (Yes.\u00a0 Boys.\u00a0 I don&#8217;t remember any girls making this projection&#8230;. well&#8230;. except this one girl&#8230; named Hillary.)<\/p>\n<p>But the thing of it is\u2026 Tommy said it like he MEANT it.\u00a0 He was\u00a0 SO dang sure of himself about this.<\/p>\n<p>I think by about\u00a0 the fourth grade, this kid knew all the branches of the government.\u00a0 And he could tell you all the requirements for becoming a President.\u00a0\u00a0 He continued with his self-assurance about his future job.<\/p>\n<p>It didn\u2019t stop there.\u00a0 He ran for Student Council in the 7th and 8th grades.\u00a0 After that, I am not sure what happened to him.\u00a0 Tommy and I went to different High Schools.<\/p>\n<p>Tonight, as I was thinking about him\u2026 I did an online search.\u00a0 As far in as I can tell\u2026. he\u2019s never been president of anything.\u00a0 Not even The Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, aka the local BPOE.<\/p>\n<p>So there you have it.\u00a0 Sometimes, some of us\u2026. don\u2019t grow up to be who we thought we would be.\u00a0 We might have an idea about it\u2026 when we are in the 4th grade, or high school, and probably college.\u00a0\u00a0 It is true for me.\u00a0 On all counts.<\/p>\n<p>I simply didn\u2019t grow up to be who I thought I would be. At least \u2026 professionally.\u00a0 But. On an intellectual, emotional, and spiritual level\u2026 I don\u2019t suppose I did a lot of visualization as a kid.\u00a0 And at this point in my life\u2026. as Popeye so aptly put it \u2026 \u201cI yam what I yam.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As most of you read this, it will the 29th of April.\u00a0 And that, is the day of my birthday.\u00a0 In this case\u2026 my 50th.<\/p>\n<p>So as I meander through these thoughts of not growing up \u2026. as I thought I might have\u2026 you\u2019ll have to excuse me.<\/p>\n<p>I think I\u2019m having a mid-life crisis.\u00a0 (Does anyone\u00a0 even call them that anymore \u2026 mid-life crises?)<\/p>\n<p>At any rate.\u00a0 Another day.\u00a0 Another dollar.\u00a0 And another day at the races.\u00a0 Popeye,\u00a0 me&#8230;..\u00a0 and Gunderson.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>\u201cI expect to pass through this world but once; any good thing therefore that I can do, or any kindness that I can show to any fellow creature, let me do it now; let me not defer or neglect it, for I shall not pass this way again.\u201d\u00a0 &#8211;\u00a0Stephan Grellet<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>\u201cThe true meaning of life is to plant trees, under whose shade you do not expect to sit.\u201d\u00a0 &#8211;\u00a0Nelson Henderson<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>There was a kid in my second grade class.\u00a0 His name was Tommy Gunderson.
