When we were growing up, our Mom was a bit of a photo hound.\u00a0 The precursor to today\u2019s equivalent of the Papparazzi.\u00a0 Every time we turned around, it seems, good old Mom was taking our picture.<\/p>\n

I know I have said it before.\u00a0 But it was consistently prevalent in our upbringing.\u00a0 The\u00a0 usual dates were a given.\u00a0 Birthdays, First-day-of-schools, Graduations, First Communions, Vacations.\u00a0 However.\u00a0 At our home, it went far beyond that.\u00a0 Chicken Pox, broken arms, turtle findings, new shoes, ice cream cones, bike riding, teeth pullings, pink eye, common colds\u2026. sleeping on the couch\u2026. it JUST didn\u2019t matter.\u00a0 Snaps.<\/p>\n

But Mom was a maven too.\u00a0 It was a film camera.\u00a0 So.\u00a0 The photos were immediately developed, filed in photo albums, labeled and dated.\u00a0 Like a religion.\u00a0 And the negatives?\u00a0 They always went in a shoebox in the cupboard.<\/p>\n

And this is what got me thinking\u2026. about\u00a0 photography and how it mimics life.\u00a0 Someone said to me today… “Hopefully\u00a0 you can forgive.\u00a0 But never forget.”\u00a0 Is this right?<\/p>\n

We got through our every day of days\u2026 doing this and that.\u00a0 And our mind captures memories.\u00a0 Hopefully, we are diligent enough to file those good and golden memories\u2026 the one we want to keep in albums.\u00a0 The significant memories.\u00a0 Yes, we call back on them time and again, like pulling a photo album on the shelf.\u00a0 And bask in the goodness.<\/p>\n

But then\u2026. there is the OTHER part of it.\u00a0 The box of negatives.\u00a0 I am not sure that we should hang on to the negatives.\u00a0 Especially a whole box of them.<\/p>\n

Yet…as my friend said…. maybe we should keep them…. in some remote way.\u00a0 You see\u2026 with photography, if you keep that negative and expose it to light\u2026 you can make a positive image from it\u2026 any time you want to.\u00a0 Again, and again and again.<\/p>\n

So\u2026 do we throw the negatives completely away?\u00a0 And keep taking those same photos over and over and over?<\/p>\n

Or do we store them on a box\u2026 that we can take down off the shelf if we need to.\u00a0 So that we don’t keep doing the same thing over and over again.\u00a0 But when we do pull up that negative…. we remember to expose it to the light to turn it into something entirely good.\u00a0 A good image.<\/p>\n

I think memories might be better served that way for me.\u00a0 So I don\u2019t keep making the same mistakes repeatedly.\u00a0 I could learn from what was dark and inverted\u2026 and turn it into something good.<\/p>\n

So then the next time… I can say “Cheese”…. and really mean it.<\/p>\n
