I was thinking about construction today.\u00a0 Not Bob the Builder construction, or Tonka Truck construction\u2026. but just regular old construction.<\/p>\n

To construct is to build, assemble, create, design, devise, formulate.\u00a0 You know how it goes… if I had a hammer\u2026all over this laaaaaand.<\/p>\n

But here’s the deal.\u00a0 Down the road from us, there is quite a bit of construction going on.\u00a0 I like to go there when everyone has gone home for the day.\u00a0 When the jack hammers aren\u2019t jacking, and the fork lifts aren\u2019t forking.\u00a0 There is something about being there… in the quiet.\u00a0 I like to think about the progress they may have made that day… or what might happen here tomorrow.\u00a0 But mostly, I like the stillness.\u00a0 The hushing of the buzz.<\/p>\n

And….\u00a0 this particular project is a bridge.\u00a0 It is an old iron bridge\u2026. nearly out of commission.\u00a0 Actually\u2026. it was\u00a0 in such bad shape that they had to close it.\u00a0 The engineers deemed it unsafe and unfit for anyone to cross.\u00a0 The bridge was broken.<\/p>\n

Wouldn’t you know.\u00a0 As the old saying goes\u2026 they didn\u2019t burn the bridge down.\u00a0 Instead, they decided to make it crossable again.\u00a0 In this case, the old bridge is being repaired, and restored\u2026 as much as possible.\u00a0 But undoubtedly there are parts of this structure which are far beyond repair.\u00a0 They will have to be replaced completely.\u00a0\u00a0 The reinforcements of the bridge\u2026 the foundation\u2026 must be started from anew.<\/p>\n

And then\u2026 it will be crossable once again.<\/p>\n

It made me think about life\u2026 and relationships.\u00a0 Some bridges we have with people in our lives remain strong and true.\u00a0 While others begin to fail, and crumble, and break.\u00a0 These unions are no longer safe for us to cross.\u00a0 Road closed.<\/p>\n

Best not to burn them completely, I think.\u00a0 But there are parts that may need to be replaced, or reshaped, or started from the ground up.\u00a0 And maybe the new bridge translates into a new crossing entirely.\u00a0 Sometimes we find people who are better for our lives.<\/p>\n

But always, hopefully\u2026. to assist in continuing our journey.\u00a0 Our forward progress.<\/p>\n

Now….. the bridge over troubled water is a different matter….. entirely.<\/p>\n
