It is no secret that I love photography.\u00a0 But one thing I really enjoy is old photography.\u00a0 So much, in fact, that I\u00a0 buy old photographic images on Ebay.\u00a0 It doesn’t matter that I don’t know the people.\u00a0 I just love to see their lives from so long ago.\u00a0 Their stories.<\/p>\n

I like to see the look in their eyes.<\/p>\n

But every once in a while, a photograph will come with a story all bundled up with it.<\/p>\n

Tonight, I’d like to tell you about\u00a0 Carlotta and Maybelle.\u00a0 They were best of friends as early on as they could remember.\u00a0 They met when they were three years of age, in a small town, called Cranston, Wisconsin.<\/p>\n

There was a brewery in Cranston.\u00a0 Nearly everyone in the town worked at Havermaele and Sons Brewery, including Carlotta and Maybelle’s fathers.<\/p>\n

So from the time they were three, they grew up together on Kensington Street.\u00a0\u00a0 Their houses were catty-corner.<\/p>\n

Unfortunately, Maybelle’s father drank too much.\u00a0 And he was mean.\u00a0 Mean as sin.\u00a0 He used to hit Maybelle on a regular basis, for no good reason at all.\u00a0 This made her terribly sad.<\/p>\n

But the one bright spot in her life, was Carlotta.\u00a0 And they were glad it was that way.\u00a0 There she found refuge, kindness, peace.\u00a0 And of course, plenty of fun.<\/p>\n

They called each other Carly and May.\u00a0 And there wasn’t a day that passed when they weren’t together.\u00a0 Until they turned 12.<\/p>\n

It was that year the Great Depression hit.\u00a0 Times got hard, and the brewery closed.\u00a0 Maybelle’s father decided to move the family out of Cranston, and away they went.\u00a0 There was no word of where they were going, and Carly never heard from May again.<\/p>\n

When Carly turned 21, she decided to move from Cranston to a bigger city, with better chances.\u00a0 Chicago it was.\u00a0 The only job she could find was a waitress gig, at the Golby’s Famous Diner….\u00a0 Home of The Big Golby Burger.\u00a0 Three months into her job, on a Sunday morning, she went over to wait on table three.\u00a0 And who was sitting there….. but May.<\/p>\n

They hugged and laughed and felt joy right down to their toes.\u00a0 And right back to being the best of friends… they flashed there in a second.\u00a0 It was like they never left each other’s side.\u00a0 Soul mates, true and true.<\/p>\n

Carly and May shared this beautiful friendship, this gift, until the day Carly died.\u00a0 She was 87.\u00a0 And after she passed, May found a way… to go to the cemetery every Sunday…\u00a0 and leave a single dime\u00a0 on her grave.\u00a0 It was their inside joke.\u00a0 It was the tip she never left for her lunch the day they reunited…. and it something they had laughed about often.<\/p>\n

May died three years later.\u00a0 She was buried next to Carly.\u00a0 They were lucky enough to have found a home.\u00a0 A home of friendship.\u00a0 A home of shared hearts.<\/p>\n

So yes, this photo came with all sorts of information…. a story packed right in.<\/p>\n

It could have come in the box from Ebay, or maybe it came from my imagination….<\/p>\n

But either way…. most every person comes with a great story all wrapped up inside…. just waiting to be told.<\/p>\n
