{"id":545,"date":"2014-04-01T23:43:27","date_gmt":"2014-04-02T03:43:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/gollypolly.com\/30473\/?p=545"},"modified":"2014-04-01T23:43:27","modified_gmt":"2014-04-02T03:43:27","slug":"the-first-and","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/gollypolly.com\/30473\/?p=545","title":{"rendered":"The first, and&#8230;."},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gollypolly.com\/30473\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/fools.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-547\" alt=\"fools\" src=\"https:\/\/gollypolly.com\/30473\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/fools.jpg\" width=\"700\" height=\"517\" srcset=\"https:\/\/gollypolly.com\/30473\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/fools.jpg 700w, https:\/\/gollypolly.com\/30473\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/fools-300x221.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I would be remiss if I did not speak to fact that today was April Fool&#8217;s Day.\u00a0\u00a0 I used to really love this little &#8220;holiday&#8221;&#8230;. if you can call it that.\u00a0 Playing practical jokes was my forte.\u00a0 Oh boy.\u00a0 Left and right.<\/p>\n<p>It started a long time ago.\u00a0 Not for me.\u00a0 But for the world&#8230;.<\/p>\n<p>The history of April Fool&#8217;s Day is thought to have started way, way back in 1582.<\/p>\n<p>And wouldn&#8217;t you know?\u00a0 Leave it to the French.\u00a0\u00a0 There was a reform of the calendar under Charles IX.<\/p>\n<p>King Chucky Nine introduced The Gregorian Calendar.\u00a0 And just stir things up a bit&#8230; they moved New Year&#8217;s Day from April 1 to January 1.\u00a0 (They had a whole New&#8217;s Year WEEK in the old calendar&#8230; from\u00a0 March 25\u00a0 to April 1.\u00a0 Talk about a party.)<\/p>\n<p>ANYWAY.<\/p>\n<p>So long ago&#8230;. in 1582&#8230;. communication traveled slowly.\u00a0 Slower than dial-up internet, I&#8217;ll tell you.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Some people were only informed of the change several years later.<\/p>\n<p>And of course&#8230; there were the more stubborn and rebellious types who refused to acknowledge the change.\u00a0 They kept their party hats for April 1 only.<\/p>\n<p>Hence.\u00a0 These people were labeled &#8220;fools&#8221; by the general populace.\u00a0\u00a0 Yeppers.\u00a0 They were subject to ridicule and had practical jokes played upon them.<\/p>\n<p>This harassment evolved over time&#8230;. and that good old prank-playing continue on the first day of April.<\/p>\n<p>(A little sidebar here.\u00a0 What makes a joke practical&#8230;. as opposed to impractical?\u00a0 Is it like having practical shoes?)\u00a0 Okay.\u00a0 Back to the deal.<\/p>\n<p>So here we are now.\u00a0 April Fools Day. \u00a0 It got to the U.S. eventually.\u00a0 The tradition spread to Britain and Scotland in the 18th century.\u00a0\u00a0 And finally, it crossed the big blue and was introduced to the American colonies by the English and the French.<\/p>\n<p>But I digress.\u00a0 Sort of.\u00a0 I didn&#8217;t mean to go on about the history&#8230; but about how I used to love playing a good joke.<\/p>\n<p>Telling my Mom I was pregnant when I was 17&#8230;.\u00a0 well&#8230;.let&#8217;s just say&#8230;.. that one didn&#8217;t go over so great.\u00a0 Right before she passed out&#8230;. she said&#8230; &#8220;And I thought you were gay.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>When she came to, I said&#8230;\u00a0 &#8220;You were right about that one Mom.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>These days&#8230; I can&#8217;t come up with too many good April Fool&#8217;s jokes.\u00a0 It appears that my real life is much stranger than fiction&#8230;. so it seems rather pointless now.\u00a0 But I still like the day.\u00a0 Once a fool, always a fool&#8230;..
