{"id":538,"date":"2014-03-31T23:39:35","date_gmt":"2014-04-01T03:39:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/gollypolly.com\/30473\/?p=538"},"modified":"2014-03-31T23:39:35","modified_gmt":"2014-04-01T03:39:35","slug":"the-air-out-there","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/gollypolly.com\/30473\/?p=538","title":{"rendered":"The air out there"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gollypolly.com\/30473\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/housespooks.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-540\" alt=\"housespooks\" src=\"https:\/\/gollypolly.com\/30473\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/housespooks.jpg\" width=\"700\" height=\"595\" srcset=\"https:\/\/gollypolly.com\/30473\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/housespooks.jpg 700w, https:\/\/gollypolly.com\/30473\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/housespooks-300x255.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>It is funny about the lot of us.<\/p>\n<p>We place a great deal of weight on the weather.\u00a0 I think this began when we, a big collective &#8220;WE&#8221; of the United States, were mostly those good old farmer-types.<\/p>\n<p>Things really depended on the weather then.\u00a0 Much more so than now.\u00a0 Sure, nowadays, the commute in to work gets a little crinkly when there is snow in the forecast&#8230;. and such.<\/p>\n<p>But back when everyone was driving horse-drawn-carts on dirt roads, and farming, and the like&#8230;. well&#8230;.. a little rain could make things quite impossible.<\/p>\n<p>Yet now.\u00a0 It is ALWAYS a big dang deal.\u00a0 And people get paid to make it that way.\u00a0\u00a0 We call them Weathermen.\u00a0\u00a0 Meteorologists.\u00a0 And of course&#8230; the sponsors.<\/p>\n<p>But never mind all of that.\u00a0 Here is where WE are funny &#8230;. at least we in the Midwest.<\/p>\n<p>When fall &amp; winter are approaching&#8230; and we&#8217;ve just had a balmy summer&#8230; and our buns are still tan&#8230;. we get out our coats and hats, and gloves and such&#8230;. when the thermometer gets down to 50 degrees.\u00a0 &#8220;Honnnneeeey&#8230;..\u00a0 Time to turn the furnace on&#8230; and it is only late October,&#8221; we say.<\/p>\n<p>But in the spring.\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 The spring, after months of subzero temperatures, and snow piled high&#8230; when those winds outside get to 50 degrees&#8230; people put on shorts, and flip\u00a0 flops, and begin leaving doors wide open.<\/p>\n<p>Same temperature.\u00a0 Two reactions.<\/p>\n<p>Yeah, I sorta&#8217; think we humans have a tendency to &#8220;meet the reality of now&#8221;&#8230;.. with a lot of influence from our past experiences.<\/p>\n<p>Okay.\u00a0 Forget about the weiather.\u00a0 Let say you meet Joe.\u00a0\u00a0 In the first few sentences, you find out Joe is a lawyer.\u00a0 And perhaps you had a bad experience with a lawyer.\u00a0 So part of that past history might influence how you feel about the guy&#8230; without really knowing him at all.\u00a0 Now that&#8217;s not really fair.<\/p>\n<p>Yet&#8230;. this same exact thing helps us to survive.\u00a0 The old lesson about putting your hand on a hot burner.\u00a0 It hurt like the dickens the first time you did it.\u00a0 So your best guess&#8230; it is going to hurt you like the dickens again.<\/p>\n<p>And there I will say it.\u00a0 This reaction to the present, based on past experience,&#8230;. can go either way really.\u00a0 It\u00a0 can be a good thing or a bad thing.\u00a0 It can help guide us&#8230; or lead us astray.\u00a0 But how exactly do you know?<\/p>\n<p>How do you know?<\/p>\n<h1>\u201cI never think of the future.
