There are a lot of different kinds of firsts.\u00a0 Some people seem to\u00a0 think of things first.\u00a0 They are the inventor types.\u00a0\u00a0 Others like to run to first.\u00a0 They are athletic.\u00a0 And some, like to be first in line.\u00a0 They are, well…. ambitious?<\/p>\n

But I am talking about another kind of firsts.\u00a0 First times.<\/p>\n

Do you remember the first time of things?\u00a0 Not adult things…. like the first time you had sex, or, got a speeding ticket, or having a baby for the first time.\u00a0 Most everybody has memory of those sorts of things.<\/p>\n

But I am talking about when we were little creatures.\u00a0 The little things.\u00a0 Like the first time you smelled a really great flower.\u00a0 Or the first time you tasted chocolate ice-cream?\u00a0 How about your very first letter delivered by mail, or wrote your own name, or tied your shoes?<\/p>\n

I don’t have a lot of early memories about doing things for the first time.\u00a0\u00a0 At least… not these little nice things.<\/p>\n

On the other hand, I do remember the first time\u00a0 I broke a bone.\u00a0 The first time I got spanked, and the last time (they were one in the same).\u00a0 I can remember\u00a0 seeing someone get stung by a bee\u00a0 for the first time.\u00a0 And also….the first time I got really, really scared.\u00a0 These are all not-so-nice things.<\/p>\n

I wonder why this is.\u00a0 Why we can remember some things and not others.\u00a0 Especially those early “hard firsts” and not the easy, nice, good little firsts.<\/p>\n

We all have different brains.\u00a0 In theory, they work mostly the same.\u00a0 Yet on the other hand… each human brain is totally unique and extraordinary in itself.\u00a0 Smart Einstein brains.\u00a0\u00a0 Brains that have a knack for fixing lawnmowers.\u00a0\u00a0 Brains that know how to cook.\u00a0 Others that are master negotiators.<\/p>\n

Noggins that can say the alphabet backwards.\u00a0 Brains that are good at meditation.\u00a0 Woodworking brains.\u00a0 Shoe makers. Boat drivers.\u00a0 Artist brains.\u00a0 House painter brains.<\/p>\n

So every one is different.\u00a0 As are our memories.\u00a0 I don’t know why this is.<\/p>\n

But if you can remember the first time you saw a fish swimming….\u00a0 or those sorts of things…\u00a0 I think you are lucky.<\/p>\n

We should probably be very glad for the good memories we can draw upon.\u00a0\u00a0 They are reminders of the right things in life.\u00a0 The sweetness of being alive.\u00a0 The good firsts we’ve had… and all the good ones yet to come.<\/p>\n
