This is Frances.\u00a0 This is Ollie.\u00a0 This is Max.\u00a0 I say they are my dogs.\u00a0 But in fact, I think, more to the point, I am their human.<\/p>\n

I don\u2019t own them.\u00a0 They don\u2019t own me.\u00a0 We are\u2026.well…… we ARE\u00a0 family.\u00a0 Sure, you may not feel this way about your dog, or your cat, and that is okay.<\/p>\n

And please, don\u2019t get me wrong.\u00a0 I love my family.\u00a0 I have the best partner in the world, and just this evening, we had dinner with two of my beautiful sisters.<\/p>\n

Yet tonight, I just wish to talk about the family with fur.\u00a0 Although\u2026 one of my sisters is pretty hairy, this is about the dogs.<\/p>\n

Yes\u2026. these four-legged-people-in-dog-suits\u2026. have touched my life.\u00a0 Like you can\u2019t imagine.\u00a0 They have laughed and cried with me.\u00a0 They\u2019ve shared surprise, and fear, and understanding with me.<\/p>\n

There have been times in my life where I have been pretty low about this or that.\u00a0 Times when I don\u2019t feel like being around anyone\u2026 barely even myself.\u00a0 It is about at that moment, that one of them will approach slowly…but surely…and drop their head right on your knee.\u00a0 Those big eyes rise to the occasion and meet yours.\u00a0 And suddenly, you feel like the world might right itself again, and start spinning on its proper axis.<\/p>\n

They\u2019ll take a long walk with you, and be as quiet as you want, or as loud and rowdy as you are.\u00a0 They chase their tales\u2026 just to show you that they can be agility clowns.\u00a0 They eat voraciously\u2026 because they love the food.\u00a0 They guide, and protect, and comfort.<\/p>\n

They\u2019ll forgive you when you\u2019ve been at your worst.\u00a0 They\u2019ll jump for joy when you win the dart game.<\/p>\n

I could go on and on.\u00a0 But the bottom line is this.\u00a0 If that doesn\u2019t spell family, I am not sure what does.<\/p>\n

With all things in life, there are the highs and the lows, the goods and the bads.\u00a0 These three dogs have way more pluses, than negatives, in the \u201ckeeping score\u201d column.<\/p>\n

Not that they would ever keep score on me.\u00a0 They love me\u2026 without condition or constraint.\u00a0 Bless their little furry hearts.<\/p>\n

I am grateful to have Maxine and Frances and Ollie in my life.\u00a0 I swear to dog.<\/p>\n
