Looking back.<\/p>\n

We all do it.\u00a0 Tomorrow will be the Throwback Thursday, after all.\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 Humans look back at the past.\u00a0 Sure enough we do.<\/p>\n

Sometimes we look fondly.\u00a0\u00a0 Good memories, and glad feelings about people, places, and things.<\/p>\n

Other times, we look with disdain.\u00a0 I\u2019ve heard some people say they have absolutely no regrets.\u00a0 I am not one of those people.<\/p>\n

I am so dang human.\u00a0 I make mistakes all the time.\u00a0 In my life, I have made some big ones.\u00a0 Colossal even.\u00a0 And with that, comes regret.<\/p>\n

Recently, I heard an analogy that works right along with all of this.\u00a0 Here it goes.\u00a0 When a boat moves through the water, it leaves a trail of waves behind.\u00a0 The wake.\u00a0 Every boat has one, if it is traveling across the surface of the water.<\/p>\n

But the wake doesn\u2019t power the boat.\u00a0 In fact, it is something that is simply happening as a result of movement.<\/p>\n

And that is us, and our lives, and the past.\u00a0 We are the boat.\u00a0 And when we move through life, we leave a trail of events behind us.\u00a0 The wake.\u00a0 The Past.\u00a0\u00a0 But again, the wake doesn\u2019t drive the boat.\u00a0 In that same way, the past shouldn\u2019t drive our lives.<\/p>\n

Sure we can look back and see that it is there.\u00a0 But it is probably a better idea to keep our eyes on what we are doing\u2026 the direction in which we are going.<\/p>\n

I often wonder if other entities have regrets.\u00a0 Like\u2026 dogs, or squirrels\u2026 or Captain Kangaroo for that matter. I better get back on track\u2026 before I regret it.<\/p>\n

I like this boat analogy. But.<\/p>\n

There IS something to be said for learning along the way.\u00a0 I think at times we should remember our past transgressions, and missteps.\u00a0\u00a0 Otherwise, we are sure to repeat them.<\/p>\n

A perfectly balance resides in there somewhere.\u00a0 You know, studies have shown that squirrels misplace about 50% of the nuts they bury for the barren winter months.\u00a0 The trick \u2026. for the squirrel\u2026. is in finding the nuts once they\u2019ve buried them.<\/p>\n

I think this analogy might work too\u2026 for humans\u2026 and looking back.<\/p>\n

The bottom line is this.\u00a0 Analogies can give you a boatload of knowledge, but they can also make you a little nuts..<\/p>\n

I made decisions that I regret, and I took them as learning experiences… I’m human, not perfect, like anybody else.<\/span><\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n
