You used to hear a lot about Campho-Phenique.\u00a0 It seems like once upon time, every other commercial slot on TV was about\u00a0 Campho-Phenique.\u00a0 \u201cCampho-Phenique helps to treat cold sores and relieves pain & itching associated with insect bites, scrapes and minor burn.\u201d<\/p>\n

The guy who invented it was names Charles Emerson.\u00a0 He had a famous older brother too.\u00a0 But we\u2019ll get to that.<\/p>\n

Oh\u2026 Those things you don\u2019t hear about any more\u2026 but like me \u2026. you think about them all the time.\u00a0 You probably just thought about a jar of Campho-Phenique the other day.<\/p>\n

Nonetheless.\u00a0 Here is another one I haven\u2019t heard in a while.\u00a0 Transcendentalism<\/em><\/span>.\u00a0 It was a\u00a0 philosophical movement that developed in the late 1820s.\u00a0 Mostly, this occurred in the Eastern region of the United States.\u00a0\u00a0 It was sort of\u2026. as a protest against the general state of intellectualism and spirituality.<\/p>\n

In fact\u2026. the doctrine of the Unitarian church as taught at Harvard Divinity School\u2026.. was of big-wiggy concern.<\/p>\n

So\u2026 basically\u2026. the transcendentalists’ core beliefs were all about the inherent goodness of both people and nature. Now\u2026 that lines right up with me, I\u2019ll have to say.<\/p>\n

Let\u2019s call them TDs for short.\u00a0 TDs believe that society and its institutions\u2014particularly organized religion and political parties\u2014ultimately corrupt the purity of the individual.\u00a0 GUESS WHAT.\u00a0 This lines up with me too.<\/p>\n

I won\u2019t go into great detail here, but one of Transcendentalism\u2019s main dudes was Ralph.\u00a0 Chuck\u2019s older brother.\u00a0 Yep.\u00a0 As in Ralphy Waldo Emerson.<\/p>\n

Young Mr. Ralph Waldo Emerson gradually moved away from the religious and social beliefs of his contemporaries.\u00a0 He broke away from the bunch of them and began formulating and expressing the philosophy of Transcendentalism.\u00a0 Of course,this all came forth in his 1836 essay, Nature<\/strong><\/em><\/span>. Which rocks.<\/p>\n

Emerson is one of those people I wish I could meet, once the Time Machine gets up and running.\u00a0 I just think he was one of the most incredible minds in history,\u00a0 with a spiritual reckoning.\u00a0 I like this guy.<\/p>\n

Emerson’s work influenced his contemporaries, such as Walt Whitman and Henry David Thoreau.\u00a0 It also influenced thinkers and writers all around the world \u2026. right down to the present. Guys like Nietzsche.\u00a0 And on and on.<\/p>\n

There is little disagreement that Emerson was one of the most influential writers of 19th-century America.\u00a0 Maybe the most.<\/p>\n

He, and his words, and thoughts…. were yet another gift we have been given\u2026 by being a part of this this life\u2026 here on earth\u2026 in this time.<\/p>\n

And the part about his younger brother Charles…. well… he might have had a cold sore once,\u00a0 but I am bull-crapping you about Campho-Phenique.\u00a0 I just had that word on my brain tonight and had to write about it.\u00a0 The rest is true though.<\/p>\n
