It was a sticky-hot day in July. \u00a0 The kind of day that hangs on you heavy wet robe. \u00a0 Mary called and told me there was an injured dog on State Route 122.\u00a0 Someone had found it in their yard.\u00a0 They were giving it water and keeping it in the shade\u2026. but they did not want to keep this \u201chair ball.\u201d\u00a0 Not one bit.\u00a0 They said it was the ugliest dog they had ever seen in their entire life.<\/p>\n

I went.<\/p>\n

When I got there, in fact, I saw a small black motionless furry thing, laying in the grass.\u00a0 I approached cautiously, picked it up, and took it to the vet.\u00a0 As I walked through the lobby, cradling this dog in my arms\u2026 I announced to anyone who would listen\u2026 \u201cThis is not my dog.\u00a0 This is not my dog.\u201d\u00a0 You see, I was a Golden Retriever Snob.\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 I was a GRS at that time in my life.\u00a0 I did not want any other canines but those Beautiful, Majestic, Smart, Strong, Golden-Children-Retrievers.<\/p>\n

So. Back to matted black furry thing in my arms.\u00a0 Diagnosis from the vet\u2026 a broken pelvis in four places, broken tail, broken teeth, tongue bitten clear through\u2026 and on.\u00a0 Would it make it?\u00a0 Maybe, but chances of that dog walking normally were slim to none.\u00a0 It was pretty young though\u2026 about 2 years old or so.\u00a0 So who could tell.<\/p>\n

As it turned out… on that day…. Mary and I took that little dog in\u2026 to see if we could get it to mend.<\/p>\n

About a half of a day later\u2026 the \u201cit\u201d turned into a \u201cshe.\u201d\u00a0 Then a couple hours later\u2026 \u201cshe\u201d got a name.\u00a0 Maxine Virginia Swift.\u00a0 By this point in time, she had won our hearts over\u2026 fast and furious.<\/p>\n

She began to transform.\u00a0 Over the next few weeks, she limped less and less.\u00a0 It wasn\u2019t long before she learned to run.\u00a0 She found her spunk.<\/p>\n

And now\u2026 NOW\u2026. 13 years later\u2026 she believes in her little Terrier Head.. that she is the mightiest creature on earth.\u00a0\u00a0 And she lets everyone else relish in this well-known fact.<\/p>\n

Why do I tell this story again?<\/p>\n

Her spirit is mighty.\u00a0 She rose from a very desperate, and dark place.\u00a0 She transformed.\u00a0 She found love in her heart, and she felt that she was loved by others.\u00a0 I believe this was the key factor.\u00a0 Love.\u00a0 Knowing love….\u00a0 in one\u2019s heart and soul.<\/p>\n

Love for others\u2026 and for ourselves\u2026 love is what matters most of all.\u00a0 That, and Milk Bone treats.<\/p>\n
