The phone rang bright and early this morning.\u00a0 Not my phone, but Mary\u2019s phone.\u00a0 I get up every morning at 5:30, so it wasn\u2019t too early to call me.\u00a0 But it might have been a bit crack-of-dawn-ish for anyone else.\u00a0 It was just a bit after 6 a.m.<\/p>\n

The United States Post Office on the line.\u00a0 My chickens had flown in.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat?\u00a0 My chickens are here?\u00a0 MY CHICKENS are HERE!\u201d\u00a0 By 6:30 a.m. I was at the Eaton Post Office banging on the door.\u00a0 \u201cOpen up in there!\u00a0 Ye has me chickens!\u201d<\/p>\n

Actually, the drive to the post office was quite nice.\u00a0 There was a beautiful sun rising\u2026 and a mist swallowed up all the fields.\u00a0 It sort of took my breathe away.\u00a0\u00a0 OR it could have been that I just slugged down a big gulp of hot coffee.\u00a0 WAY TOO HOT coffee.<\/p>\n

Anyway, back to the chicks. I picked them up, introduced myself, and we got in my car.\u00a0 They are probably only a couple of days old.<\/p>\n

You see\u2026 I wanted NOTHING to do with this farm animal adventure.\u00a0 I would not have anything to do with the care of the chickens which we were getting a few weeks ago.\u00a0 No way, no how.\u00a0 But then I started getting the bug.\u00a0 Mary took me to a chicken show\u2026 I got my American Poultry Association Membership\u2026 and it has been a slippery slope ever since.<\/p>\n

From then on, I decided the breed for me was going to be New Hampshire Reds.\u00a0 (Mary had Orpingtons on the way.)\u00a0 So\u2026 as a late birthday present, she ordered me 4 New Hampshires\u2026 and today they came.<\/p>\n

As we drove in front of the house,\u00a0 with that beautiful sun making its way a little higher from the horizon\u2026.\u00a0 a gentle young deer stood in a bed of purple wildflowers.\u00a0 It was so incredibly picturesque.\u00a0 AND then\u2026. As if it couldn\u2019t get any better, a little brown fuzzy bunny hopped along the road, near the deer.\u00a0\u00a0 (Oh my gosh!)\u00a0 As I pulled into the driveway and started up the lane\u2026. a Flicker flew past my car and into the field\u2026.\u00a0 and yet another stunning chestnut-colored deer stood in the tall grass.<\/p>\n

I slammed on my breaks.\u00a0 \u201cWhat is this\u2026. Freakin\u2019 Disney???\u00a0 Is there a camera on me???\u00a0 Is somebody filming this?\u00a0 Besides our security cameras?\u00a0 I mean.. I feel like I am on The Truman Show or something\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n

And then I laughed out loud.\u00a0 Some days feel like a bit like Disney.<\/p>\n

You see… the truth of it is…… I love these little chickens.\u00a0 They have changed me for the good, I think.\u00a0 Their little fuzzy feathers\u2026 and tiny peeping peeps.<\/p>\n

I will especially love them\u2026. when they start laying eggs for me.\u00a0 Then we really WILL be pals.<\/p>\n
