You know, I am open to hearing all sorts of ideas, and practices, when it comes to\u2026. well\u2026 just about anything.\u00a0\u00a0 I don\u2019t discount other people\u2019s beliefs, simply because they are not my own.<\/p>\n

There isn\u2019t a one of us\u2026. , I don\u2019t suppose….. , who is smart enough to know for sure.\u00a0 Yes we can believe, but it doesn\u2019t make it true.\u00a0 Heck, look at the Easter Bunny\u2026 or even Hillary Clinton in 2008.<\/p>\n

Any way.<\/p>\n

I like to learn about peaceful, quiet prayer practices, such as Zen Buddhism, and Meditative Yoga, and Full-Contact Karate.\u00a0 (I just threw that in about karate, to see if you were paying attention.)<\/p>\n

But there is this “thing” in the Zen Way, that says we shouldn\u2019t be judgmental.\u00a0 Now, I think this is pretty right on.\u00a0 I try not to judge others based on this or that or anything.\u00a0 Yet, the Zennish premise is that we don\u2019t judge anything<\/strong><\/em> as good or bad.\u00a0\u00a0 We simply just experience the sensation.<\/p>\n

As much as I\u2019d like to\u2026 this is truly impossible for me.\u00a0 I have some pretty clear cut feelings about this.<\/p>\n

For example\u2026 let\u2019s take pizza.\u00a0 When I have a delicious hot piping crusty, cheesy pizza in front of me\u2026 and I take a bite\u2026 as hard as I may try\u2026 I cannot say this is neither good nor bad.\u00a0 You bet your butt it is good. So good in fact, I\u2019ll have another piece, thank you very much.<\/p>\n

But let\u2019s say you close your finger in your car door.\u00a0 Now, I can definitely deem this as bad.\u00a0 When that door slams shut on my hand, I do not have the least little bit of Zen in my body. \u00a0 I will tell you that right. now.\u00a0 In fact, I say to myself… and the whole rest of the world\u2026 right out loud\u2026 \u201cOh MY GOD.. this is BAD!\u201d\u00a0 Really bad.\u00a0 Like… my thumb shouldn’t be bending that way… bad.<\/p>\n

I know what feels good, and I know what feels terrible.\u00a0 And it is genuine.<\/p>\n

I like a chicken egg\u2026 no matter how you cook it.\u00a0 Good.<\/p>\n

I don\u2019t like rubbing alcohol in an open cut.\u00a0 Bad.\u00a0\u00a0 Or drinking sour, curdled milk.\u00a0 Again, bad.<\/p>\n

Holding a puppy.\u00a0 Good.\u00a0 Running into a steel beam with your forehead\u2026 bad.\u00a0 You see how this goes.<\/p>\n

A monk, I will never be\u2026NO. \u00a0\u00a0 They will never give me the Brown\u00a0 Robe.
\nAnd come to think of it…. I got kicked out of the Brownies when I was in the Second Grade.<\/p>\n

So there you have it.\u00a0 Life\u2019s Precursors are everywhere.\u00a0 I guess that’s good.\u00a0 Or maybe bad.\u00a0 I’m just not going to judge it, either way.<\/p>\n

It’s not our job to play judge and jury, to determine who is worthy of our kindness and who is not. We just need to be kind, unconditionally and without ulterior motive, even – or rather, especially – when we’d prefer not to be.\u00a0 —\u00a0 <\/span>Josh Radnor<\/strong><\/em><\/div>\n
