For some reason, I have macaroni pieces on my mind.\u00a0 Remember when we were kids, and we used to spend a fair amount of our time doing \u201cArts & Crafts\u201d in school, and at camp, or in Boy Scouts or Girl Scouts, and such?<\/p>\n

We used to take macaroni pieces and glue them to paper, and color them with paint or markers to make a picture.\u00a0 Early brushes with mosaics.\u00a0 Lots of pieces fitting together to make something beautiful and complete.<\/p>\n

Or, how about pipe cleaners.\u00a0 There used to be whole art classes devoted to conjuring figures out of pipe cleaners.<\/p>\n

Then the ultimate construction project with popsicle sticks, or Quaker Oat boxes, or toilet paper cardboard rolls.\u00a0 Cutting strips of construction paper and weaving them into place mats.\u00a0 Paper plate art.\u00a0 Hand-print-finger-paint pictures of turkeys, and rabbits, and butterflies, or whatever.<\/p>\n

My personal favorite\u2026. the clay ashtray.\u00a0 Oh, every time we had a clay ashtray project, I would be happy as a pig in the mud.\u00a0 And there was no shortage of people to receive this awesome hand made gift.\u00a0 Everybody smoked, everywhere.<\/p>\n

As adults, we just don\u2019t sit down and do the arts & crafts like we used to.\u00a0 Not most of us.\u00a0 The world needs more clay ashtrays, I\u2019ll tell you. And popsicle benches.\u00a0 And pipe cleaner people skiing, or playing tennis.\u00a0 It is like having a Coke and a Smile.<\/p>\n

I would like to think that these things would make the world a better place.\u00a0 But.\u00a0 But I think it is going to take a heck of a lot more than Elmer\u2019s Glue to fix the sum of things on this earth of ours.<\/p>\n

You see, tonight I watched 60 Minutes on CBS and it scared the holy-heck right out of me.\u00a0 Not so much the part about the Laser Weapons in outer space.\u00a0 What really shook me was the father of the Syrian family, weeping, because he had to risk the life of every single person in his family, for them to flee Syria together.\u00a0 On a ramshackle boat.\u00a0 All because everyone there in Syria, \u201ceveryone, has turned into monsters. No one loves anyone here anymore.\u00a0 No one.\u00a0 There is no love.\u201d\u00a0 And he wept.<\/p>\n

And I wished I could scoop them up and take them away from there.\u00a0 And sit down with them, and make macaroni pictures.\u00a0 To take all those little pieces and put them together to make a whole picture that was beautiful, and that made sense.\u00a0 I wanted to watch those kids smile again.\u00a0 That\u2019s what I wished.<\/p>\n
