{"id":3249,"date":"2015-03-17T23:10:31","date_gmt":"2015-03-18T03:10:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/gollypolly.com\/30473\/?p=3249"},"modified":"2015-03-17T23:53:33","modified_gmt":"2015-03-18T03:53:33","slug":"st-who-day","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/gollypolly.com\/30473\/?p=3249","title":{"rendered":"St. Who Day&#8230;."},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gollypolly.com\/30473\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/gildarocks.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-3252\" src=\"https:\/\/gollypolly.com\/30473\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/gildarocks.jpg\" alt=\"gildarocks\" width=\"800\" height=\"568\" srcset=\"https:\/\/gollypolly.com\/30473\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/gildarocks.jpg 800w, https:\/\/gollypolly.com\/30473\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/gildarocks-300x213.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I feel I would be remiss if I didn&#8217;t talk about St. Patrick&#8217;s Day.\u00a0 I mean, it was March 17th all day today.\u00a0 People everywhere, dressed in green, wearing funny shamrock hats, and &#8220;Kiss Me, I&#8217;m Irish&#8221; pins, drinking green beer, and such.\u00a0 Entire cities pouring green dye into their rivers, in the celebration.\u00a0 It really is a pretty big festivity.\u00a0\u00a0 It seems to be teaming with magic, wonder and excitement.<\/p>\n<p>Now&#8230;&#8230; .. what all of that pomp and circumstance has to do with St. Patrick, I am not sure.\u00a0 Known as the &#8220;Apostle of Ireland,&#8221; he is the primary patron saint of Ireland.<\/p>\n<p>And so it happened&#8230;when he was about 16&#8230;\u00a0 about the time he should have been learning to drive a car&#8230; and not snakes&#8230;.. , he was captured by Irish pirates from his home in Britain.\u00a0 From there he was taken as a slave to Ireland.\u00a0 Not for long though.\u00a0\u00a0 He was in Ireland six years before escaping and returning to his family.<\/p>\n<p>Irish Pirates.\u00a0 Now there is one for you.\u00a0 Were they little Leprechaun looking fellows in a boat&#8230; wearing knickers?\u00a0 Would they sail around endlessly, looking for the end of the rainbow and their little pots of gold?\u00a0 I can only wonder, but I am off topic.<\/p>\n<p>It just hit me that no other Ethnic Group in America has such a day&#8230;\u00a0 here in the U.S&#8230;. like the Irish do.\u00a0 Not the Polish, the French, or the Italians.\u00a0 Not Germans or Russians&#8230;. nadda.\u00a0\u00a0 Sure there are festivals, like Oktoberfest.\u00a0\u00a0 But nothing like this.<\/p>\n<p>I do not have a drop of Irish in me.\u00a0 Not as far back as I have researched, on both my Dad and my Mom&#8217;s lines.\u00a0 We are German, German, German.. &#8230;. and uhhhhnnnn&#8230;.. German.\u00a0 I bet most people reading this don&#8217;t even know who the Patron Saint of Germany is.<\/p>\n<p>For those who don&#8217;t&#8230;. it is St. Boniface.\u00a0 He was a pretty big dude when it came to the establishment of the first organized Christianity in many parts of Germany and Europe.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 But like all good Saints&#8230; he pretty much died a horrible death.\u00a0 He was on a missionary trip, and got ransacked by a bunch of traveling burglars.\u00a0\u00a0 They killed him dead.\u00a0 And 52 others who were with him.<\/p>\n<p>I think it might have been the Irish Pirates&#8230;. but I can&#8217;t say for sure.\u00a0 The &#8220;burglars&#8221; were looking for treasure.\u00a0 Again&#8230; I speculate it was those little fellas after those pots of Gold.<\/p>\n<p>But the whole St. Boniface Day thing never caught on in the U.S.\u00a0 It could be good, I am telling you.\u00a0 Not that I drink, but I am pretty sure the Germans have better beer&#8230;. and a LOT better food than the Irish.\u00a0 And we wouldn&#8217;t be dying everything green.<\/p>\n<p>So&#8230; I am starting a movement.\u00a0 Let us lay down our Shamrocks, and pick up our Oak Trees, one-eyed cats, and BMWs, Volkswagens,\u00a0 Porsches and Audis.<\/p>\n<p>Weinerschnitzel for everyone.\u00a0 Lasst die Spiele beginnen.\u00a0 Das ist gut.<\/p>\n<p>Yet.\u00a0 The bottom line is this.\u00a0 It doesn&#8217;t really matter how you decided to celebrate March 17th.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 What matters.. &#8230;.. is that you made a decision to celebrate something.<\/p>\n<p>A lot of time, life just seems like the old &#8220;Day In.
