I have some super-duper friends, I’ll tell you.\u00a0 They are as good as gold… as sweet as pie.<\/p>\n

One of my good friends mentioned today…. that she hopes I write about pie tonight.\u00a0 I think this is my first request for a topic.\u00a0 So pie she will have.\u00a0 By the slice or even the whole of it.<\/p>\n

Of course I have to mention that I used to love pie when I was a kid.\u00a0\u00a0 Like it was some kind of drug.\u00a0\u00a0 I had two favorites.\u00a0 Butterscotch…. and Pecan.\u00a0 Oh my goodness, my Grandma Jeanette K passed on some crazy-good recipes when it came to those gems.\u00a0 And it really helped that my Mom and my brother could bake like crazy.\u00a0 Especially my big brother Ed.\u00a0 Mmm, how I loved that pie.\u00a0\u00a0 But I wouldn’t eat just one slice.\u00a0 I always at 3.14 slices.\u00a0\u00a0 Just for good measure.<\/p>\n

But when did all this madness begin?\u00a0 Well I’ll tell you.\u00a0 Where almost everything else seemed to originate.\u00a0 Back with those ancient Egyptians.\u00a0\u00a0 Early pies were in the form of flat, round crusty cakes.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 They were called galettes.\u00a0 The crusts were made up of ground oats, and wheats, and such.\u00a0 But the yummy treat inside was honey.\u00a0\u00a0 Yes, my honey pie.<\/p>\n

And get this..\u00a0 …. . to revisit the age-old\u00a0 question of which came first, the chicken or the egg..\u00a0 Well perhaps it was the pie.\u00a0 Sometime before 2000 BC, a recipe for chicken pie was written on a tablet in Sumer (that’s in Egypt).\u00a0\u00a0 Ooooh.\u00a0 I got to get\u00a0 ME some Chicken Pie.<\/p>\n

But hold the phone here.\u00a0 Maybe my friend wanted to know about pi…. and not pie.\u00a0 You know today is March 14…. in the year 2015.\u00a0\u00a0 And looky there at the first digits of the mathematical pi.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 It is 3.1415.\u00a0 THAT Pi.<\/p>\n

If you really wanted to celebrate with the big math-dogs….\u00a0 take it out a few more places….. and you should have clicked your heels at 9:26:53 a.m. (3.141592653).\u00a0\u00a0 I know I did!\u00a0 Those nine digits are more than enough for most applications requiring pi.<\/p>\n

The first calculation of pi was done by Archimedes of Syracuse (287\u2013212 BC), one of the greatest mathematicians of the ancient world. Archimedes approximated the area of a circle by using the Pythagorean Theorem.\u00a0 I like to call him Arch-ey and the Pythags.\u00a0\u00a0 Like a Rock Group… only smarter.<\/p>\n

So what is Pi?\u00a0 Well… basically…. Pi is an infinite, non repeating decimal.\u00a0 Pi (\u03c0) is the ratio of a circle\u2019s circumference to its diameter.\u00a0\u00a0 And…. as I mentioned….. that good old tasty Pi is a constant number.\u00a0 That means that for all circles of any size, Pi will be the same.\u00a0 3.14.<\/p>\n

In other words…. If you cut a Pecan Pie …. from edge to edge… right across the center…..\u00a0 it will take your knife 3.14 times that exact distance…. to go ALL the way around the outside of the pie.\u00a0 But don’t cut that crust off yet.\u00a0 That would be a crummy thing to do.<\/p>\n

And if your pie comes up missing… do you know what would Archey and Jeanette say about such a thing……\u00a0\u00a0 perhaps…..<\/p>\n

Let pie-gones be pie-gones.\u00a0 OR maybe….<\/p>\n

If at first you don’t succeed, pi, pi again.<\/p>\n

I’ll take the Pi Road, you take the low road.<\/p>\n

Live and Let Pie.<\/p>\n

Pie for a Pie, Tooth for a Tooth.<\/p>\n
