Measure.<\/p>\n

To look at the word itself…. well… it is kind of a combination of Me + Assure.\u00a0\u00a0 We are a “measuring” kind of people we are. I think we do this for assurances.<\/p>\n

“When will the train be here?\u00a0 In about 20 minutes.\u00a0 How long should I bake those cookies.\u00a0 Oh, give them around 7 minutes.\u00a0 How tall are you?\u00a0 Six feet two inches.\u00a0 What does that pig weigh?\u00a0\u00a0 Approximately\u00a0 400 pounds.\u00a0 Big pig.\u00a0\u00a0 Pretty big pig.”<\/p>\n

Yes.\u00a0 We try to measure just about everything.\u00a0 Even the intangible.\u00a0 “How much do you love me?\u00a0 How long has he been feeling sad?”\u00a0 And on…<\/p>\n

But as hard as we try, somethings truly cannot be measured.\u00a0 In fact, most things can’t be measured…. or at least I would assert that notion.<\/p>\n

This morning, bright and early, I went to the store to buy some shipping boxes.\u00a0 The temperature gauge read 7\u00ba F.\u00a0\u00a0 I thought to myself… oh seven.\u00a0 That’s really not THAT bad.\u00a0 (Now give me that same temperature in July.\u00a0 I will give a different perspective on that measurement.)<\/p>\n

Nonetheless… I segue.\u00a0 As I drove, the sunrise was absolutely beautiful in every way.\u00a0 This could never be measured, or quantified. It just was…. incredibly and wonderfully awe inspiring.<\/p>\n

So many things during the day…. are the same way.\u00a0 A smile on someone’s face.\u00a0 The way a piece of grilled salmon tasted.\u00a0\u00a0 A good song on Pandora.\u00a0 The wag of the dog’s tail when you walk in the door.\u00a0 The list goes on and on…. from moment to moment.<\/p>\n

Still later in the day… on my quest for boxes… I met my childhood look alike… Tweety Bird.\u00a0 On the end of an umbrella.\u00a0 Priceless.<\/p>\n

And late this afternoon, I took notice of the ice sculpture at our pond.\u00a0 Again, a gift of beauty from nature… that 7\u00ba F nature… that simply cannot be metered, weighed or counted.\u00a0 It undeniably is.<\/p>\n

We live in a culture that is fanatical about numbers. We seek standardization.\u00a0\u00a0 We don’t care for “the ambiguous” as much as we do “the precise.”\u00a0 The\u00a0 belief of Western culture is that numbers make a thing real.<\/p>\n

If we can put a number it,\u00a0 we make it real.\u00a0 And once it is real… we can begin to manage and control whatever that thing is.\u00a0 We depend on numbers.<\/p>\n

Now don’t get me wrong.\u00a0 Sometimes measurements are good, and necessary.\u00a0 And we need them to survive.\u00a0 Like… say you are spinning out on the operating table when you are having that ugly mole removed…. and the surgeon says… “Oh for the love of gawd… what is his blood pressure?”\u00a0 And everybody in the room just kind of shrugs… and says… “I bet you it is WAY up there by the color of his face.”<\/p>\n

You see.. in this case… a measurement would be good.<\/p>\n

But there are times in life when perhaps… we should not try to measure. Or calculate.\u00a0 Or assess.\u00a0 Maybe we should just lean back, take in a deep breath… and… as the Beatles so aptly suggested…. “Let it be.”<\/p>\n
