I have this thing for photograph….. just in case this little detail about me has slipped by you.\u00a0 It is true.\u00a0 I am completely fascinated with them.<\/p>\n

These days, I am not sure people think about them too much, one way or the other.\u00a0 We are so inundated with information, digital media, and social networks… that seeing a photograph seems inconsequential for most people.<\/p>\n

But I see a photo, and it is like a piece of perception…..\u00a0 from a Time Machine.\u00a0 One that has traveled to some other neverland.\u00a0 And this two-dimensional image is what we have…. as proof of the venture.<\/p>\n

In that moment, in that space in time, in this universe, that never was before…. and never will come again… is that photograph.\u00a0 Those faces looking back at the camera lens, will never be the same again, as they were in that moment.\u00a0 And all those moments, from all world, and all over the universe, bring us to this very moment right now.\u00a0 And here we talking about them.<\/p>\n

You would think I’d be terribly rebellious against the photograph.\u00a0 From the time I popped out of the womb and said… “What on God’s green earth just happened to me?\u00a0 That was one heck of a tight squeeze getting out of that place!”…. I was met with Paparazzi Lucy.\u00a0 My dear Mom Lucy.\u00a0 She was relentless in her “picture taking” and as kids, we resented it.<\/p>\n

Now….. as an adult….even though there are nearly 100 photo albums compiled by Snappy Lucy…. it does not seem like enough to me now.\u00a0 I want to see more.\u00a0 I want proof of that Time Machine Journey.<\/p>\n

I want to see more of my Grandma K and me.\u00a0 I want to see what the screens in the house looked like after my brother painted them.\u00a0 I want to see a really good photo of my baby feet.\u00a0 And I want to have a glimpse of our brand new puppy when I was five. ….. OH WAIT.\u00a0\u00a0 We weren’t allowed to have a dog.\u00a0 I was totally getting carried away with my “want” list.<\/p>\n

But I digress.\u00a0 Photos.\u00a0 I collect them.\u00a0 If I see an intriguing photograph on Ebay,\u00a0 I buy it.\u00a0 And then I wonder.<\/p>\n

The photograph I posted tonight are people which I have never met.\u00a0 But I KNOW they were there.\u00a0 I have proof.\u00a0 And I can see them in that moment.\u00a0\u00a0 The one point in time…. which never was before, and never will be again.\u00a0 Dutch and Freda are seated.\u00a0 Dutch’s real name is Dietrik Kaufman, and he used to be a Jeweler in Germany.\u00a0 Now, here in Northern Ohio, he is a farmer.\u00a0 His wife, Freda, is a strong woman.\u00a0 Her father owned a thriving vineyard in Germany.\u00a0 Both families were very well-to-do.\u00a0 They have come to the U.S. to escape religious persecution.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Their two sons, Heinrich and Georg are good boys, and very bright.\u00a0 Musically gifted. Yes, both are skilled violinists.\u00a0 Oh, I could go on and on about them.\u00a0 How they met Fr. Theodore Reinhold in Philadelphia.\u00a0 He was the one to tell them about the land they would find, cheap, near a town in Ohio called Spencerville.<\/p>\n

But I’ll stop, because I don’t know if any of those stories about them are true or not.\u00a0 I’ll never know.\u00a0\u00a0 But there they are.\u00a0 In my hand.\u00a0 At this point in time in the universe. Never before.\u00a0 Never again.<\/p>\n

And that is what amazes me about a photograph.<\/p>\n
