I try to learn something new every day.\u00a0 I mean it.\u00a0 If I can learn something about myself, all the better.\u00a0 You know, a way to improve, or perhaps something which might make me a better citizen of the world.<\/p>\n

Yesterday, here is what I learned.\u00a0 I am thick.\u00a0 Thick as a brick.<\/p>\n

The long and short of it…is this.\u00a0 If you didn’t read here yesterday, I talked about my egg-cracking adventures.\u00a0 Someone told me cracking eggs on the counter is the “correct way” to perform the task.\u00a0 So,\u00a0 for a year, I tried to perfect the counter-egg-cracking-method.\u00a0 To no avail.\u00a0 It was a mess.\u00a0 Egg shells everywhere, broken yellows, eggs spilling all over the counter.\u00a0 Disastrous.\u00a0 The yolk, it turns out… was on me.<\/p>\n

The key phrase in all of that…. “so, for a year….”<\/p>\n

After I posted my perilous tale, many people wrote in… “Yeah. I tried that for a couple of times and it didn’t work, so I went back to the old way.”<\/em> OR…. “Yes.\u00a0 I heard that too.\u00a0 But it didn’t prove to be very good, so I went back to how I did it before.”<\/em><\/p>\n

WHhhhhhhhhaaaaaatttt?\u00a0 After one or two times…. they learned it didn’t work?\u00a0 ME???\u00a0\u00a0 Numbskull that I am… I continued to try…. and fail.. and try…. and fail….. in my quest to perfect this “WAY I was supposed to do something”!<\/p>\n

There is something terribly wrong with me.\u00a0\u00a0 I am convinced.\u00a0 But I have been this way my whole life.\u00a0 If someone, especially an “expert” gives me clear instructions… I follow them.\u00a0 I call it “The Nun Force”.\u00a0\u00a0 The behavior stems from the fear of getting it wrong… and facing the humiliation that ensues.\u00a0 Welcome to Catholic Grade School of the Yesteryear.\u00a0\u00a0 Bad habits aside…..<\/p>\n

I believe that often times, it is really important to follow instructions.\u00a0 A great example, “Stop at a red light.”\u00a0\u00a0 But there are those times in life, when the instructions we are given aren’t quite right.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Or maybe… not quite right for us, in that moment.\u00a0 Remember the old deal… how do you get 7?\u00a0 5 + 2. Correct.\u00a0 But so is 4 + 3.<\/p>\n

This morning, I cheerfully tapped my eggs on the edge of the frying pan.\u00a0 I went 4 for 4.\u00a0\u00a0 Lesson learned.\u00a0\u00a0 Another case cracked.\u00a0 And you know what 4 for 4 mean?\u00a0 It means… I ate.<\/p>\n
