Drama.\u00a0 Drama. Drama.\u00a0 Some people thrive on it…. others avoid.\u00a0 Yet, in our current culture, it seems to be everywhere.\u00a0\u00a0 In real life situations, people over-dramatize situations.\u00a0 I think this is fueled because we see it in all forms of mass media, from TV to Twitter.\u00a0 Heck, even the weather forecasters around these parts get their panties all in a bunch about things.\u00a0 Oh, the drama.<\/p>\n

Yet.\u00a0 I think in some ways, this has been going on in various cultures throughout time.\u00a0 The Gladiators.\u00a0 Witch Burnings.\u00a0 And on.<\/p>\n

But tonight’s story takes place in England.\u00a0 In 1807.\u00a0 A true story indeed.<\/p>\n

It starts with an argument, between a woman and a man.\u00a0 Imagine THAT.<\/p>\n

Elizabeth Godfrey was her name.\u00a0 She lived in an apartment in the Marylebone area of London.\u00a0 Next door, lived a man name Richard Price, and a woman of ill-repute.\u00a0 Apparently there was some sort of disagreement between them, and Richard struck Elizabeth, while out in the hallway.\u00a0 It seemed to be the end of it.<\/p>\n

But later that night, Elizabeth knocked on her neighbors door.\u00a0 The hooker answered, and Elizabeth told the woman to get Richard.\u00a0 So Dick comes to the door, and Elizabeth stabs him in the eye with a pocket knife.\u00a0 Yowza.<\/p>\n

Old Dick pulls the blade out of his eye.\u00a0 But wouldn’t you know it?\u00a0 A few days later he dies.\u00a0 And guess who is convicted of murder.\u00a0 Yep.\u00a0 none other than the stabber…..Elizabeth The Knife Godfrey.<\/p>\n

On the day Elizabeth was sentenced to be hanged, two others were slated for execution also.\u00a0 Their names were Owen Haggerty and John Holloway.\u00a0 (Owen and John had murdered another man some years ealier…. and almost got away with it.\u00a0 But their partner ratted them out.\u00a0 And off to the nooses they went.)<\/p>\n

So.\u00a0 On the day the three were sentenced to be hanged, the public came to watch.\u00a0 Drama, drama, drama.\u00a0 Nearly 40,000 people showed up for the event at\u00a0 the grounds outside Newgate and the Old Bailey, near London.\u00a0 Every inch of the grounds was packed.<\/p>\n

Well… when the three were loaded up to the gallows, the crowd pressed closer to watch.\u00a0 Unfortunately, these things start at the back and move forward.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The pressed nearer and nearer. \u00a0 They began to trample.\u00a0 \u00a0 When it was all said and done…. 27 people were crushed to death, including many women and children, and more than 70 were injured.<\/p>\n

So my guess is…. when in doubt…. avoid the drama.<\/p>\n

It may keep someone from wringing your neck…. or trampling on your back.<\/p>\n

Or even knifing you in the eye to begin with.<\/p>\n
