One of my favorite things to do, is to start the day with Mary.\u00a0 We have our coffee, and sit in front of the big window that overlooks the meadow.\u00a0 We talk about a lot of different things,…. the day ahead… the yesterday behind.\u00a0 But all the while we watch the wildlife.<\/p>\n

The birds, the birds, the birds.\u00a0\u00a0 The deer, chipmunks, squirrels, rabbits, and whatever else may saunter through while we are enjoying our daily dose of Java.<\/p>\n

It really is quite a nice way to start the morning.<\/p>\n

Today, the birds were in full form.\u00a0 Flocks of Goldfinches, Nuthatches, Chickadees, Woodpeckers, Doves, Titmice, Sparrows, Wrens, House Finches, Blue Jays, Cardinals… and a few sordid others.<\/p>\n

And in the height of the feeding frenzy today… a hawk swooped down… dove into the bushes… and came out with a small bird in its clutches.\u00a0 It all happen in a flash.<\/p>\n

The unlucky bird was a European Sparrow.<\/p>\n

How could I tell, you ask?\u00a0 Well…. as the Hawk was flying away…. I could hear a little, muffled… “VIVA LA FRANCE” coming from the region of its talons.<\/p>\n

Thankfully, European Sparrows are nuisance birds… so the Hawk sort of did us a favor.\u00a0 But it upset me… none-the-less.<\/p>\n

When we created this bird feeding area, we didn’t have an “All-You-Can-Eat-Smorgasbord” for Hawks in mind.\u00a0 That was not our intention… not one bit.<\/p>\n

But.\u00a0 Nature is just that.\u00a0\u00a0 Ever-Adapting and Uncontrollable Nature.<\/p>\n

And.\u00a0 As with most of life… we have little control over what happens.\u00a0 Not ultimately.\u00a0 Sometimes our best intentions turn upside down in the day-to-day scheme of things.\u00a0\u00a0 That is just the way of the world.<\/p>\n

It doesn’t make it any less upsetting though.\u00a0 When things don’t go our way.\u00a0 I guess the best we can do… is accept the process and the outcome.\u00a0 And if we want different results…. we try different things.\u00a0 And try, try, again.<\/p>\n

The control may not be ours.\u00a0 But the ability to adapt…. IS.<\/p>\n
