Tonight, we watched the National Dog Show.<\/p>\n

What a complete treat.\u00a0 The finals came down to a stunning group of amazing and beautiful dogs.\u00a0 For fun on a Saturday Night….. we try to figure out who the judge will pick.\u00a0\u00a0 I was winless.\u00a0 Once again, my favorites were overlooked.\u00a0 The Norwich Terrier was in the wings.\u00a0\u00a0 Not to mention the Norfolk Terrier.\u00a0 And the little Russell Terrier…. which was a cute as could be…. also on the sidelines.<\/p>\n

I loved the Bernese Mountain Dog, and the Golden Retriever too.\u00a0 But they didn’t get to the final ring either.<\/p>\n

So after two hours of viewing the competition…….
\nThe Bloodhound wins the show.\u00a0 (Which always reminds me of Christopher Guest’s Ventriliquist-Dog-Handling Character in “Best in Show.”\u00a0\u00a0 “Pine Nut.\u00a0 Peanut.\u00a0 Macadamia Nut.\u00a0 Hazelnut. Cashew Nut. “)<\/p>\n

Anyway.\u00a0 Dogs are amazing to me.\u00a0 I just read a study which was conducted to test dog’s understanding of language.\u00a0\u00a0 They spoke a series of words in the dog’s native human language… that is… the language it’s owners spoke.\u00a0\u00a0 And then, they spoke the same words in a foreign tongue.<\/p>\n

The dog used the opposite side of his\/her brain to try to decipher the words.\u00a0 Which indicated that they truly are trying to process human’s spoken language.\u00a0 (I am giving an abridged encapsulation of the study here.)<\/p>\n

The long and short of it is this.\u00a0 Dogs are smart.\u00a0 They are beautiful beings.\u00a0 And I like them.<\/p>\n

Back to The National Dog Show.\u00a0 These babies are the cream of the crop, the pick of the litter.\u00a0 The Golden Eggs.\u00a0 But I think the AKC is doing it all wrong.\u00a0\u00a0 I think they should hold a competition for Mutts.\u00a0 Mixed Breeds.\u00a0 Heinz 57’s.<\/p>\n

You see… for as beautiful and amazing as all these Breed Standard Canines were…. none of them compared to our Maxine, or our Frances, or our Ollie.\u00a0 I am certain we have the most incredible dogs in the world.<\/p>\n

I am pretty sure you do too…. if you own a dog…. and you love yours like we love ours.<\/p>\n

And while they try to make sense of, and comprehend our spoken words…. they do something far better than that.\u00a0 They understand the language of the heart… and they speak it quite well.<\/p>\n
