The importance of being earnest.<\/p>\n

While this is the title of a movie, in which two friends use the same pseudonym (“Ernest”) for their sly and devious activities…..\u00a0 it isn’t really what I am talking about tonight.\u00a0 At least, I don’t think so.\u00a0 I’ve never seen the movie.<\/p>\n

Anyway… I am talking about the word.\u00a0 Earnest.\u00a0 I love this word.\u00a0 I will probably name my first born son Ernest.<\/p>\n

It refers to something which shows sincere and intense conviction.\u00a0 It means to be devout and unfeigned.\u00a0 To be impassioned.\u00a0 To dive into things with a heartfelt attitude.\u00a0\u00a0 Authentic.\u00a0 Honest.\u00a0 Resolute.<\/p>\n

I believe that in life… it is amazing when you have something that you truly feel earnest about.<\/p>\n

Sometimes people do things out of duty, or responsibility, or need.\u00a0 But sometimes those things are met with a certain lack of enthusiasm, or a bit of languor.<\/p>\n

To be totally honest, I am on a few endeavors for community service.\u00a0 I serve on boards, and work on projects, and those sorts of thing.\u00a0 But it is an action of duty.\u00a0 An obligation.\u00a0\u00a0 While I am dedicated, I cannot honestly say that I am passionate about it (at least not all the time).<\/p>\n

On the other hand, I feed the birds.\u00a0 Frequently and consistently.\u00a0 I do it because I don’t want them to go hungry.\u00a0 I do it earnestly.\u00a0 It isn’t an easy task, and there isn’t any payoff or reward.\u00a0 (Well… I get to watch them eat.\u00a0 While that is completely cool… I could find other things to watch…. that would not be as involved, and cost so much.)<\/p>\n

It isn’t my intention to gain praises or approval.\u00a0 It is just something I do because I am whole-heartedly committed to it.<\/p>\n

I wish I could understand more about myself… to know and find the things that impassion me.\u00a0\u00a0 Things that I would feel intense enthusiasm and conviction for.<\/p>\n

I think there is a LOT to be said for the importance of being earnest.\u00a0\u00a0 I have met some people that seem to have an ulterior motive for most of what they do.\u00a0 On the other hand, I have met numerous earnest individuals.\u00a0 And when your motive is to do something…. because it is the good thing to do… an no one else is watching….<\/p>\n

… well… you completely rock.\u00a0 I wish good blessings for you.\u00a0 Earnestly.<\/p>\n
