Compromise.
\nNow that is really something.\u00a0\u00a0 It has a few different meanings, by definition.\u00a0 Mostly, it is an agreement …. or even a settlement… of a dispute.\u00a0 But the agreement is made by each side making concessions.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 It is sort of a “middle state” which often requires modifications of a “something.”\u00a0 Sort of like the two-headed llama in the Dr. Doolittle movie.\u00a0 The Push Me – Pull Me thing…<\/p>\n

And of course, you must have an ability to listen to two (or more) sides when something is in question.<\/p>\n

Compromise is relative too.\u00a0 It all depends how strongly you feel about the outcome.\u00a0 If you are sharing an ice cream cone with someone, and trying to decide on the flavor,\u00a0 “Fudge Nut Brownie Deluxe” may be what you REALLY want… but “Triple Peanut Butter Chocolate” will do just fine.\u00a0 So THAT compromise was easy.\u00a0 Now… let say you and yours….. are deciding on whether to buy a pick up truck OR a convertible.\u00a0 And you haul around a lot of wood.\u00a0 Well… the compromise becomes more weighted for you.<\/p>\n

Tonight, Mary and I came to a compromise on a fairly big decision we’ve been working on here at the property.\u00a0 We arrived at a pretty good agreement.\u00a0 But…. when we couldn’t quite iron out every little detail, we decided to let it all rest, until… as Mary put it… “the dust settles.”\u00a0 Now that is a good phrase.<\/p>\n

“When the dust settles.”\u00a0\u00a0 Pretty wise advice in a LOT of cases.\u00a0 Just let things be still for a while.\u00a0 Let it all just sit where it is… and maybe we can draw funny pictures in the dust layer tomorrow.<\/p>\n

But me oh my.\u00a0 I am the Queen of Clean …. I have a heck of a time letting dust settle anywhere.\u00a0 I sweep, and dust, and wipe off counters.\u00a0 I like things neat and tidy.\u00a0 No dusty dirt anywhere.<\/p>\n

This carries over whenever I try to negotiate or compromise.\u00a0 I like things “just so” and everything in their place.\u00a0 I like to get things all buttoned up.<\/p>\n

Yet… when it comes to compromise… it is often not possible to get things finalized.\u00a0 Mary is really good at discussion, and solution-finding.\u00a0 Me… I am like a bull in a china shop.\u00a0 Especially when I feel strongly about the outcome.<\/p>\n

But tonight, we are letting the dust settle.<\/p>\n

I think compromise is a good thing.\u00a0 And I have a lot to learn…. about compromise… a whole lot more.<\/p>\n

As the old saying goes….. “Compromise is a lot like a Chihuahua in a cow field.”\u00a0\u00a0 I am not sure exactly what this means… but like I mentioned earlier…. I have a lot to learn.<\/p>\n
