Today, my Mom said to me\u2026 you know your Dad didn\u2019t make a very good engineer.\u00a0 Right out of the clear blue.\u00a0 I asked her what she meant.\u00a0 (Because Dad really was a very successful design engineer for a lot of years.)<\/p>\n

And she said in all earnestness, \u201cHe was a humanitarian.\u201d<\/p>\n

She was right about that.<\/p>\n

Which led me to think about how we all are employed.
\nLet every man be occupied in the highest employment of which he is capable and die conscious that he has done his best.\u2028–Sidney Smith\u2028\u2028<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

Doing something that we feel good about never loses its importance to our lives.\u00a0 Especially when it comes from the heart.<\/p>\n

And I don\u2019t suspect that it needs to be a prestigious occupation for our work to be important. In fact, who are we\u2026 or anyone else\u2026. to decide what kind of job is truly important?<\/p>\n

The most menial of tasks\u2026 or the littlest actions\u2026. may have a profound impact on a particular man or woman or child today.\u2028\u2028\u00a0 Some people say that the highest order of employment is the offering of love and acceptance to the people on our paths each day.\u00a0 Today, in fact.<\/p>\n

For us to define employment solely in terms of career is a bit shortsighted. Our society pushes us in this direction.<\/p>\n

Yet.\u00a0 Every minute we’re awake we’re busy with something. And\u2026. by definition\u2026. that means we’re employed.\u2028\u2028 When we give a broader definition of employment a chance\u2026. that in turn\u2026..\u00a0 gives every one of us a chance to put in a productive day. Simply.\u00a0 Knowing that our presence, our words, our willingness to listen to someone else may have made life better for them.\u00a0 That\u2019s a good job, by any standard.<\/p>\n
