Most of the time\u2026 I find myself adrift in thought.\u00a0 I will physically be present in a certain place or time\u2026 buy my mind is not running in the same dimension.\u00a0 At all.<\/p>\n

This happens to me several times each day.\u00a0 I will snap back to it\u2026 and see the person in front of me\u2026 moving their mouth up and down\u2026 and up and down.\u00a0 But I have absolutely no idea what he or she just said.\u00a0 Going. Going.\u00a0 Gone.<\/p>\n

Take this\u2026. for example.\u00a0 You know I love a good movie.\u00a0 Well\u2026 I was watching\u00a0 The Desolation of Smaug on our video cue.\u00a0 The next thing I knew\u2026 those poor little dwarfs were in a heck of bind\u2026\u00a0 I mean a SERIOUS pinch.\u2026 and I had no idea how they got into that predicament.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Nope.\u00a0 You see\u2026.\u00a0 I had been to Hammondsport, NY\u2026 for a little while.\u00a0 And now I was back\u2026 right in front of the TV.<\/p>\n

I am sort of like \u201cThe Transporter\u201d\u2026 with a limp.<\/p>\n

Apparently.\u00a0 I am not the only one with this affliction.<\/p>\n

So. Back to the movies\u2026.<\/p>\n

One of my favorites when I was growing up was \u201cThe Secret Life of Walter Mitty\u201d which first came out in 1947.\u00a0 It starred Danny Kaye (another one of my comedic heroes).\u00a0 (The remake in 2013 with Ben Stiller is pretty decent too.)<\/p>\n

The\u00a0 movie is based on a short story\u2026 written by James Thurber in 1939.\u00a0 It is probably the most famous of Thurber’s stories.\u00a0 As with many of his stories\u2026. it first appeared in The New Yorker (Magazine) on March 18, 1939.<\/p>\n

I recently learned this:\u00a0 The name Walter Mitty and the derivative word “Mittyesque\u201d\u2026..\u00a0 \u2026 which denotes an ineffectual person who spends more time in heroic daydreams than paying attention to the real world.\u00a0 In some cases\u2026.it refers to a person who intentionally attempts to mislead or convince others that he is something that he is not.<\/p>\n

But old Walt would drift in and out\u2026 in his heroic escapades of the mind.\u00a0 Helplessly.<\/p>\n

Until of course, one day\u2026 he finds his heroic Mojo.<\/p>\n

My drifting is far less glamorous.\u00a0 I can assure you.\u00a0 It mostly consists of me\u2026 making \u201cprojections\u201d about upcoming events\u2026.\u00a0 or lamenting a mistake I\u2019ve made\u2026 in a day gone by.\u00a0 And\u2026. wishing \u2026 that on one of those occasions\u2026. that life would give us Mulligans.\u00a0 Do overs.<\/p>\n

The Secret Life of Polly Whoosydoodle.\u00a0\u00a0 That\u2019s me.\u00a0 So.\u00a0 The next time we talk\u2026 and I have a crappy grin on my face\u2026. don\u2019t take it personally.\u00a0 I\u2019m probably just visiting\u00a0 Wichita Falls\u2026 or De Moines\u2026 or something.<\/p>\n

I’d rather be where I am standing… but the truth of the matter is…. it’s all in my head.<\/p>\n
